The Malay Wedding

The Malay Wedding is steeped in rites and customs:

Akad Nikah.
Solemnisation of marriage by a kadhi.



Adat Merenjis
Symbolic blessings with rose water and bunga rampai by family member and guests.



Mas Kahwin
Dowry given by the groom to the bride during the nikah.

Bunga Rampai
An infusion of screwpine leaves, roses and jasmine flowers.

Kenduri
Wedding feast for family and friends.

Bungga Manggar
Colured decorations accompanying the procession to the bride's home.

Hantaran
Exchange of matrimonial gifts to foster good relations between the two bridal families.

Kompang
Thudding of handheld percussion in a porcession in a procession to welcome the arrival of bride and groom.

Pelamin
Decorated wedding dais where the bride and groom are seated to receive blessing from elders.

Bunga Telur
Tradisional wedding favours given to guest symbolising a fertile union.
